• Be organised! It’s worth booking your preferred removal company with as much notice as possible in advance to avoid disappointment and to ensure your preferred booking time is available.

• We advise that if you’re packing your belongings yourself, you start as early as possible. It’s astonishing how long it can take to fill the boxes!

• It’s not uncommon to come across belongings that you’ll decide you don’t want to take with you – leave time to decide what to do with these – perhaps take them to a local charity shop or offer them to friends and family.

• Be clear about what you want to be moved by the removal company. Any removal company needs to know in advance exactly how many pieces of furniture they’re taking.

• Removal companies should always be careful when handling your possessions – however, we recommend you seek insurance, as accidents can happen.

• If any issues arise, like a change in your completion date, let your removal company aware straight away. They’ll only be able to accommodate your change if they know about it and have time to make the necessary arrangements.

• Once your moving date is confirmed, we recommend you contact your utility companies (e.g. gas, water, electricity etc.) to arrange them to be disconnected.

• Royal Mail will redirect your post if you inform them of your new postal address – but also notify everyone else of your move (e.g. bank, Phone Company, doctor etc.)

• If your chosen company has agreed to work for a standard hourly rate, make sure you know in advance of any potential penalty charges, e.g. if they take an extra hour to pack than estimated.

• Depending on where you live or work, it’s often very wise (and polite) to warn your neighbours in advance. They might want to offer help – and you can ask them to avoid parking directly outside your home on the moving day.

• Many household items are surprisingly heavy when packed all together, like books. Try to divide them in separate boxes so not to make too heavy a load to lift.

• If necessary, it’s worth asking the firm if they have blankets/sheets available to protect any furniture that can potentially get damaged or scratched – no one wants scratches on their freshly polished dining table.

• If you have a spare key to your new property the removal company might want to borrow it in case they arrive there before you do.

• Garden sheds and garages are often used for storage over the years – don’t forget to pack their contents.

• And remember, once the removal vehicle is loaded, remember to have a final walk around the house (including the attic and/or basement). Once you’ve left it might be too late to return.
